What is Open Water Diving?

Open Water Diving refers to dives conducted in natural water bodies like oceans, seas, and lakes. The Open Water Diver certification is the most recognized entry-level certification and is your ticket to diving worldwide.

Why Get Certified?

Certification ensures you learn the skills necessary to dive safely and confidently. Through theory lessons, confined water practice, and open water dives, you will:

  • Master essential diving techniques
  • Learn how to handle diving equipment
  • Understand safety protocols and dive planning

Once certified, you can dive up to 18 meters (60 feet) independently with a buddy.

What to Expect During Training

  1. Theory Sessions: Learn the science behind diving — buoyancy, pressure, and underwater communication.
  2. Confined Water Dives: Practice basic skills in a pool or pool-like environment.
  3. Open Water Dives: Apply your skills in real-world conditions, supervised by professional instructors.

Essential Gear You’ll Use

  • Mask and Snorkel: For clear vision and breathing at the surface.
  • Fins: To propel you efficiently underwater.
  • Wetsuit: For thermal protection.
  • Buoyancy Control Device (BCD): Helps you float, sink, or stay neutral.
  • Regulator and Tank: Provides the air you breathe underwater.

*All necessary gear is typically provided during your course at Underwater Academy.

Tips for First-Time Divers

  • Relax and Breathe Normally: Stay calm and breathe slowly — it conserves air and helps you stay relaxed.
  • Equalize Early and Often: Prevent discomfort by equalizing pressure in your ears as you descend.
  • Stay Close to Your Buddy and Instructor: Always dive with a partner and follow your instructor’s guidance.
  • Have Fun: Enjoy the experience — you’re exploring a world few get to see firsthand!

Why Choose Underwater Academy?

  • Small Group Classes: More personal attention.
  • Certified, Experienced Instructors: Ensuring safety and fun.
  • Well Maintenance Equipment: To make your dives comfortable and reliable.
  • Flexible Schedules: Weekend and weekday courses available.
